The head of the British army during the Iraq invasion has launched a scathing attack on US post-war policy, a newspaper reported, underlining growing trans-Atlantic strains over Iraq.
General Sir Mike Jackson, a now retired former chief of the general staff, said the approach taken by former US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was “intellectually bankrupt” and described his comment that US forces “don’t do nation-building” as “nonsensical”, The Daily Telegraph said.

South Korea’s hostage nightmare is finally over, but the 19 former captives will face questions when they return home about an Afghan aid mission which sparked a six-week crisis and cost two lives.
“Thank God. They are all freed now,” Je Mi-Sook said after her brother Je Chang-Hee was released by Afghanistan’s Taliban.

Last night the meeting of the Nepean Presbytery heard about the difficulties asylum seekers face. It was encouraging to hear about things people are doing that truly make a difference.
Many people seeking asylum in Australia are put on bridging visa E while they are being processed. This means they have no access to health care, are not allowed concessions on public transport, and in particular are not allowed to work or study.
A plan to force schoolchildren into work gangs and make them pick up rubbish until they are visibly tired has caused outrage in a Central Australian Aboriginal community.
The new federally-appointed manager of the Yuendumu Aboriginal community in Central Australia has proposed the scheme for school truants.
