News of hostage releaseSouth Korea’s hostage nightmare is finally over, but the 19 former captives will face questions when they return home about an Afghan aid mission which sparked a six-week crisis and cost two lives.

“Thank God. They are all freed now,” Je Mi-Sook said after her brother Je Chang-Hee was released by Afghanistan’s Taliban.

John Howard and Kevin Rudd are quoted in News Limited newspapers this morning complaining about Bearded Orientals: Making the Empire Cross and another entry for this year’s Blake Prize for Religious Art.

Melbourne Afghani familyLast night the meeting of the Nepean Presbytery heard about the difficulties asylum seekers face. It was encouraging to hear about things people are doing that truly make a difference.

Many people seeking asylum in Australia are put on bridging visa E while they are being processed. This means they have no access to health care, are not allowed concessions on public transport, and in particular are not allowed to work or study.

The new federally-appointed manager of the Yuendumu Aboriginal community in Central Australia has proposed the scheme for school truants.

Malcolm TurnbullBusinessman Geoffrey Cousins says he hopes voters in the federal Environment Minister’s electorate will take notice of a full-page advertisement tomorrow involving a number of Australian celebrities.

Mr Cousins and a group of other prominent Australians – including former tennis champion John Newcombe, actors Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, playwright David Williamson and singer Mark Lizotte (Diesel) – have taken out the advertisement to protest against the proposed Gunns pulp mill for northern Tasmania. Paul Potts singingPaul Potts worked in a mobile phone warehouse in South Wales and went about largely unnoticed, until recently at least. His appearance on the TV show Britain’s got Talent raised some eyebrows and he did not seem the kind of person ‘cultured’ enough to be able to sing opera.

The first round performance was amazing to watch. On the stage walks a man who lacks self-confidence. The music begins and suddenly there is a transformation … Without wishing to be unkind, it is as though the beast becomes the beauty.

The video clip of this touches me deeply every time. I commend it to anyone who would like to see some ‘good news’ as a change to the usual diet of news on our media services. You can find it on YouTube here.
